Mark Roberts discovered traditional music by being an annoying teenager, hanging around at coffeehouses, festivals and contradances in the 70’s. In his current role as an annoying adult, Mark is primarily known as a flute and 5-string banjo player but is also comfortable playing guitar, bouzouki and percussion.
He has been part of a number of groundbreaking bands in traditional music including The Red Clay Ramblers, Touchstone, The Sevens, The Clayfoot Strutters and Childsplay. In addition to recording and performing with these groups he has 2 flute recordings with guitarist Dan Compton: The Gloup and High Caul Cap. His flute and pennywhistle feature prominently in the film, The Secret of Roan Innish.
He has taught numerous instruments at many music and dance camps: Pinewoods, Maine Fiddle Camp, Augusta Heritage, Algoma Trad and The Swannanoa Gathering to name a few. Known as a lyrical and sometimes powerful flutist Mark always lets the rhythm take the lead. “Never hurried, never laboured, just the perfect pulse and natural lilt to the music at all times.” -Kevin Crawford
